SFTP · rsync · Borg · United States (West)
Virteche storage boxes are SSH storage in the United States (West): SFTP, SCP, rsync and Borg on port 23, with snapshots and a flat monthly price that includes transfer. If you use Hetzner Storage Box or rsync.net today, the same backup tools work here. You copy your data across and point the tool at a new host.
Billed monthly, or prepay for a lower rate on the storage box page, where you order.
SSH on port 23
SFTP, SCP, rsync and Borg, plus a restricted shell for ls, cp, mv, du and checksums.
Snapshots
Manual or scheduled, 10 to 40 per box by size. Browse them, copy files back, or revert the box.
Keys or password
A password chosen at checkout, and SSH keys you manage from the dashboard.
IP allow-list
Limit logins to your own addresses. Others are refused before a password is asked for.
Transfer included
Monthly transfer is included in the price. Past it the box slows down; it is never cut off or billed extra.
Grow any time
Move to a larger box from the dashboard, paying the difference for the rest of the period.
Order a box and add your SSH key
Copy your data across with rclone
From any machine that can reach both boxes, set up the old and new box as SFTP remotes and copy. rclone streams the files straight across, so nothing needs to fit on the machine in between. OLD_PORT is the SSH port your current provider gives you (23 on Hetzner Storage Box, 22 on rsync.net).
rclone config create old sftp host=OLD_HOST port=OLD_PORT user=OLD_USER key_file=~/.ssh/id_ed25519
rclone config create new sftp host=NEW_HOST port=23 user=NEW_USER key_file=~/.ssh/id_ed25519
rclone copy old:backups new:backups --progress
rclone check old:backups new:backupsPoint your backup tool at the new box
For Borg, the repository URL changes to the new host. Borg notices the move and asks once; set the variable below to accept it.
export BORG_RELOCATED_REPO_ACCESS_IS_OK=yes
borg list ssh://NEW_USER@NEW_HOST:23/./borgFor restic, rsync or rclone, change the host and username in the repository or destination setting.
Run a backup and test a restore
Usually only the host, username and key change. Borg, restic, rsync, rclone, Kopia and Duplicati all reach a storage box over SSH on port 23, the same way they reach other SSH storage boxes.
In one data centre in the western United States, on a RAID 1 mirror, so a failed drive does not take the box offline. We do not keep a separate copy of what you store; for anything irreplaceable, keep one more copy somewhere else.
Yes. Take one from the dashboard or set a daily, weekly or monthly schedule. A box holds 10 to 40 snapshots depending on its size; they count toward its space, and you can browse them, copy files back or revert the whole box.
The box slows down for the rest of the month. It is never cut off, nothing extra is charged, and the allowance resets on the 1st. Copying a large archive in counts toward it, so a big move may be quicker spread over the turn of a month.
Yes, with rclone mount on Windows, macOS or Linux, or SSHFS on Linux. Access is over SSH only, so there is no Samba (SMB) or WebDAV share.
