Storage boxes: connecting, space and transfer

How to connect to a storage box over SFTP, rsync or Borg, manage its password and SSH keys, and how space, transfer and billing work.

What a storage box is

A storage box is space you reach over SSH. You get a host, port 23, a username (sbNNNNNN) and the password you chose when ordering — or add SSH keys and use those instead. Your files are the only thing the box can see; there is no general-purpose shell.

Shellls cd pwd cp mv rm mkdir rmdir touch du df chmod quota and md5sum sha1sum sha256sum sha512sum — one command at a time, no pipes or redirects

Connecting

sftp -P 23 [email protected]
rsync -av -e 'ssh -p 23' ./folder/ [email protected]:folder/
borg init --encryption=repokey-blake2 ssh://[email protected]:23/./backups

Check the host key fingerprint against the one on your storage box page the first time you connect. Step-by-step setups are in the guides: Connecting to a storage box and Backing up a server with Borg.

Password and SSH keys

  • Password: chosen when you order. Change it any time on your storage box's page (type your own or press Generate); the old one stops working within a minute.
  • SSH keys: add or remove them on the same page (ed25519, RSA of at least 2048 bits, or ECDSA). Changes take effect within a minute.

Space and transfer

  • Space is the size you bought, counted in decimal units (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). Uploads that would go past it fail; df -h or quota in the shell shows where you stand.
  • Transfer — uploads plus downloads — is included each calendar month, equal to the box size (up to 5 TB). You are emailed at 80%. Past 100% the box keeps working at a reduced speed until the 1st of the next month; nothing is blocked.
  • Usage in the dashboard refreshes every 10 minutes.

How your data is stored

Boxes sit on a RAID 1 mirror in the western United States, so a failed drive does not take your box offline or lose files. We do not keep a separate backup of box contents, and a mirror cannot undo a file you delete or overwrite yourself, so for irreplaceable data keep one more copy elsewhere.

Billing, suspension and cancellation

  • Renewals follow your chosen term (monthly, or 3, 6 or 12 months) and appear with your other invoices. Turn on auto-renew under Billing → Payment methods to pay automatically.
  • If an invoice goes unpaid past the grace period, the box is suspended: your files are kept but logins are refused until it is paid. If it stays unpaid, the box and its data are deleted.
  • Cancel from Billing → Cancellations, right away or at the end of the paid period. When a cancellation takes effect the box and everything in it are permanently deleted.
